FAQS

What do I need to bring with me when  arrive for my course?

Nothing except an enquiring mind and a loving heart. In its simplest form, Soul Midwiving is all about being a loving companion or friend to someone who is dying.

But  bring anything that you like to use to feel comfy  and relaxed such as   favourite essential oils, blankets, singing bowls etc

Are there any books I should read before I come,  to prepare me?

We have a suggested reading list   to inspire  and inform  and we can send it by email

I have no medical qualifications, but I'm desperate to be a Soul Midwife..does that matter?

No, S M's are non -medical helpers working alongsiode and in co-operation with the exisiting medical team.  We train Soul Midwives from all walks of life  including teachers, vetinary assistants, healers, undertakers , an air hostess even a rock star!  We are there to provide comfort, love and support  it's as  beautifully simple as that

Why do I feel that I've already done Soul Midwiving before? It's as if I have some ancient memory?

Probably because you have! We've all used these skills before to help the people we love to die well. It's deep in our bones and our ancestral memory. Since time began we have always known how to sit with the dying. It's just that over the last 50 years or so more people have died away from home  and as a result, we've forgotten what to do.

I  am a spiritual person  but not religious   does this matter?

Not at all. We work with the  very varied beliefs of the people we are working with and  help them in whatever way comforts and sustains them...  Our Soul Midwives come from many varied backgrounds including   Anglican, Catholic, Buddhist, Quaker,  Pagan

Why do you have a conch shell as your logo?

In some traditional communities a conch shell is hung outside the home of the  village "listener"  to show that they are available to help others by listening, being present and sharing their experiences. As Soul Midwives that's one of our most important roles both for the dying person but also their loved ones

If I decide to become a practioner  will I be to be part of an organisation and be able to receive further mentoring and support?

Yes,  ofcourse. We this is the reason for  having a Soul Midwives Foundation. We are able to offer continued training, participate in  on going research, collaborate in exploring more ways to extend our services to those who most need them and offer love and support to each other.  As we expand and  there are more of us, informal groups are able to meet and mentor each other . There is also telephone and email support  for Soul midwives and  from this autumn onwards there will be a regular newsletter and meetings /lectures

I am interested in  working as a soul midwife with the living as well as the dying?  Is there any  plan to expand the work to cover this?

Yes! Have a look at the Soul Academy page for more details of courses that are focussed on  the soul  and it's relevance  for  the living and  enjoying a soulful daily life
